U.S. President Trump said on Friday that he has directed U.S. government agencies to stop using Anthropic's technology. Subsequently, the Pentagon announced that Anthropic was listed as a supply chain risk enterprise.
Anthropic said in a statement: "Labeling Anthropic a supply chain risk would be an unprecedented move that has historically been targeted only at U.S. adversaries and has never been publicly applied to any U.S. company before. We are deeply saddened by this development."
Previously, the Pentagon wanted to use Anthropic's Claude chatbot without any restrictions within the scope of the law, but Anthropic has always insisted that Claude cannot be used for mass surveillance against Americans or for fully autonomous weapons operations. The Pentagon then issued an ultimatum to Anthropic, giving it until Friday to cancel the contract if the rules were not relaxed. However, Anthropic rejected the Pentagon's request.
