After newly installing a Windows system, you will find a Windows activation code priced at about 5 yuan on Taobao and other platforms, claiming "one-click activation" and "permanently valid". Compared with the official license on Microsoft's official website, which often costs nearly 1,000 yuan, it is a bargain. But is this ultra-low-price activation code really reliable? Will it be banned by Microsoft in the future?

First of all, it is certain that ultra-low-price Windows activation codes are unreliable. These activation codes are essentially gray products that wander on the edge of Microsoft's licensing system.Although it is true that the system can be temporarily activated, it cannot provide the stability and security of genuine authorization, and there are still hidden dangers.

The most common form of low-price activation codes is the leakage of enterprise volume authorization keys (MAK/KMS). Large enterprises purchase keys through Microsoft's volume licensing program for internal device activation, and some employees or agents export them for resale in violation of regulations, forming a low-price circulation chain. The MAK key has a limited number of activations and becomes invalid when used up. The KMS key needs to be used with an unofficial server and can only achieve pseudo activation.

There is also the leakage of MSDN/TechNet subscription keys. Microsoft once provided such subscription services to developers. Subscribers can obtain a large number of test activation codes, and some people resell them for profit.

In addition, there are OEM keys extracted by disassembling the device. These keys are bound to the motherboard of the original device, have a very low success rate in cross-hardware use, and violate the license agreement; illegally reused retail keys, which are repeatedly activated by sellers on multiple devices through scripts, are easily marked and banned by Microsoft.

These low-price activation codes exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft's activation mechanism to achieve temporary verification. For example, KMS activation simulates the enterprise environment through a third-party server and sends activation instructions to the system. The validity period is usually 180 days. After expiration, you need to reconnect to the server for renewal. If the server is shut down, the system will return to an inactive state.

The leaked MAK and OEM keys have not been detected abnormally by Microsoft in the short term and can trigger activation normally. However, once a large number of abnormal activation records appear, Microsoft will globally revoke the entire batch of keys, causing the system to suddenly fail.

In other words, the activation code that seems to be very cost-effective actually has a lot of risks behind it. First, the activation status is extremely unstable and may be blocked at any time, causing pirated watermarks to appear on the desktop, making it impossible to use personalized settings, and even affecting system updates. Second, there are security risks. Some sellers will bundle malicious plug-ins, mining programs, or steal user privacy through activation tools. If these problems occur, they will have no after-sales service, and they can only consider themselves unlucky.

There are three formal activation methods for Microsoft Windows systems: one is OEM activation pre-installed on brand machines, which is bound to the motherboard and can be automatically activated after reinstalling the system; the other is a retail key purchased from the official website or an authorized dealer, which supports cross-device migration and has complete after-sales service; the third is enterprise batch authorization, suitable for multi-device scenarios.

For ordinary users, if they do not want to purchase genuine keys for the time being, they can use the unactivated version officially provided by Microsoft. The core functions are not affected, except for the lack of personalized settings; they can also be activated through the migration of the digital license bound to the device for free and compliant use. Remember not to buy low-priced activation codes for cheap, and do not use activation tools from unknown sources to avoid making a small gain.
