Tonight, the official account of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding released an announcement on the death of giant pandas "Banban" and "Xiangguo". The announcement stated,The giant panda "Ban Ban" of Hangzhou Wildlife World and the giant panda "Xiang Guo" of Hangzhou Zoo died on February 9 and 10, 2026 respectively due to ineffective medical treatment.

In response to the deaths of two giant pandas, we quickly set up an expert working group to investigate the cause of death. After autopsy tests,The causes of death were determined to be multiple organ failure caused by intestinal obstruction and mesenteric volvulus.

Intestinal obstruction and mesenteric volvulus are both acute abdominal diseases of the digestive tract in giant pandas, with mortality rates as high as 60% and 100% respectively. They are serious diseases that cause death in captive giant pandas.

We will conduct further investigations into both zoos,Hangzhou Wildlife World and Hangzhou Zoo Panda Hall are ordered to close from now on for rectification.

In order to ensure the health of the other two giant pandas, "Yiyi" and "Chunsheng", they have been transported back to the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center and the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base respectively.
