Apple today officially launched the latest and most affordable member of the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 17e, which features "stronger performance, larger storage, a more durable body and a more comprehensive connection experience." The starting storage capacity is directly doubled to 256GB, priced at US$599, which is the same starting price as the previous generation of the same product, and is also four times the starting capacity of the iPhone 12.

iPhone 17e is equipped with Apple's latest generation A19 chip, which uses an advanced 3-nanometer process and is equipped with a faster and more energy-efficient 6-core CPU. Officially, it is up to 2 times faster than the iPhone 11. It can handle everything from daily photo swiping to running Apple Intelligence's local generative models smoothly. The 4-core GPU integrates a neural acceleration module and supports hardware-level ray tracing. It can run extremely demanding 3A games on the phone and present more realistic light and shadow effects. The upgraded 16-core neural network engine is optimized for large-scale generative models, and combined with the neural accelerator on the GPU side, Apple Intelligence and other AI models run significantly faster than the previous generation.
In terms of connectivity, iPhone 17e is built-in the latest generation of Apple’s self-developed cellular baseband C1X. Compared with the C1 used in iPhone 16e, the peak rate is up to double, and it can achieve the same level of network performance as iPhone Air. At the same time, its energy consumption is about 30% lower than the baseband used in iPhone 16 Pro, which also contributes to the all-day battery life of the entire machine. Officials said that with the combination of Apple chip energy efficiency, C1X baseband and iOS 26 power management, iPhone 17e can provide "all-day battery life."

The new machine continues to have a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, using OLED technology, supporting up to 1200 nits HDR peak brightness, making it easy to watch content in strong light environments, and supporting Dolby Vision video playback. The screen surface is covered with the second-generation ceramic panel Ceramic Shield 2, which is 3 times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation, and a new Apple-developed coating is added to reduce reflective glare. This front panel has been extended to the entire iPhone 17 series. iPhone 17e has passed IP68 protection certification and can withstand water up to 6 meters deep for up to 30 minutes. It is splash-proof, waterproof, and dust-proof. However, the official also emphasized that the relevant protection capabilities will decrease with daily wear and tear, and liquid intrusion is not covered by the warranty. In terms of body material, the new machine uses a lightweight but strong aerospace-grade aluminum alloy middle frame, combined with a matte-textured back panel, and the overall design is positioned as "durable and high-end."

In terms of interaction form, iPhone 17e is equipped with Face ID facial recognition, which is used to unlock the device, verify payments, and log in to applications, and retains physical "action buttons" so that users can quickly call common functions such as flashlight and visual intelligence with one click.
The imaging system is another major upgrade focus of the iPhone 17e. Its rear 48-megapixel Fusion camera supports optical-quality 2x telephoto cropping, which is equivalent to integrating two focal lengths into one lens, making it easier to shoot close-up compositions. Users can choose to shoot at up to 48 million pixels to obtain extremely detailed photos, or use the default 24 million pixel mode to strike a balance between file size and image quality, making it easier to store and share. Thanks to the improved image processing pipeline, the character mode has been further evolved, with a more natural blur effect, the foreground subject remains clear, and the background presents a smooth depth-of-field transition; the new generation HDR more accurately presents true skin tones while retaining highlight and shadow details.

iPhone 17e also introduces the "next-generation portrait" function. The system can automatically identify subjects such as people, cats, and dogs, and record depth of field information when the user presses the shutter. Even if it is taken in the form of an ordinary photo, it can be converted into a portrait photo with a blurred background in the "Photos" application afterwards, and the focus point position can be adjusted arbitrarily. In low-light environments, night mode can help users capture photos with lower noise and more complete details to meet daily night scene shooting needs.
In terms of video, iPhone 17e supports up to 4K 60-frame Dolby Vision video recording and can simultaneously capture spatial audio. Pair it with AirPods or Apple Vision Pro for a more immersive listening experience. The new Audio Mix function provides richer sound editing methods, while wind noise reduction relies on machine learning to automatically identify and suppress interference such as wind sound to improve sound pickup quality.
Continuing the safety and communication features of recent generations of flagships, iPhone 17e supports multiple satellite services: when users are in areas without cellular network and Wi-Fi coverage, they can send text messages via satellite to contact relatives and friends, use the "Emergency SOS Satellite Service" to contact local rescue agencies, use the "Road Assistance Satellite Service" to contact cooperative rescue service providers, and update the geographical location through satellite in the "Find" application to let family and friends know their travel trajectory. In addition, the device also supports a "car accident detection" function, which can automatically call emergency services when a serious car accident is detected, providing additional protection when the user is unconscious or unable to reach the iPhone.
iPhone 17e comes pre-installed with iOS 26. The system has significant adjustments in visual and smart experience. One of the core features is the new Liquid Glass design language, which makes the interface more fluid and transparent, while retaining familiar interaction methods and expanding personalized gameplay. Apple Intelligence is further integrated into all parts of the system, supporting Live Translation in scenarios such as messaging, FaceTime, phone calls, and AirPods, allowing users to communicate across languages. The visual intelligence function is extended to the entire screen content, and users can search, ask questions or perform next steps on the currently displayed content. In terms of communication and focus, the new call screening function can automatically answer calls from unknown numbers and ask for the reason for the call, while "waiting" can replace users on the phone line and wait for manual access. The Messages app also introduces unknown sender filtering, which collects relevant messages into separate folders to avoid interfering with the main conversation list.
In terms of charging and accessory ecology, iPhone 17e uses a USB‑C interface and supports wired fast charging. With a 20W or above power adapter, it can charge to about 50% power in about 30 minutes. In terms of wireless charging, the new phone fully supports MagSafe and Qi2 standards, and can achieve up to 15W wireless fast charging. Compared with the iPhone 16e, the power of 7.5W when using ordinary Qi wireless charging is doubled. The MagSafe ecology includes chargers, bases, protective cases, card holders, camera accessories, etc. The accessories can be automatically aligned to the back of the fuselage through magnetic suction, improving convenience of use.
In the release, Apple emphasized that iPhone 17e continues its goals in sustainability. The aircraft uses 30% recycled materials as a whole, including 85% recycled aluminum for the fuselage shell and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery; 55% of the electricity used in the supply chain manufacturing process comes from renewable electricity such as wind energy and solar energy. The new products focus on durability and repairability during the design stage, and provide industry-leading software update cycles, while meeting Apple's high standards in energy efficiency and chemical safety; the paper packaging is 100% fiber-based, making it easy to recycle.
In terms of price and sales strategy, iPhone 17e offers two storage capacities of 256GB and 512GB, with a starting price of US$599, or in the United States, it can be purchased in 24 installments for US$24.95 per month. Apple also cooperates with operators and official trade-in programs: US users who purchase an iPhone 11 through an operator can get a discount of up to $400, and if it is an iPhone 13, they can get a discount of up to $599.
