Recently, the Light Year Beyond (GN06) team under Meituan announced that its new product Tabbit AI browser has entered public beta. After the product was released, some users posted on social networks that the Tabbit AI browser had plagiarized their own code and listed screenshots of the relevant code.
Regarding the above situation, Sina Technology noticed that Tabbit AI Browser officially announced on the Xiaohongshu platform: We are concerned about the community’s discussion on Tabbit Browser’s use of the “Companion Frog” source project code and open source compliance. The team attached great importance to this matter and immediately conducted an in-depth self-examination of the project's open source and compliance status.
Officials stated that on December 30, 2025, the team paid attention to the read-frog open source project when developing the translation function. At that time, the project warehouse did not contain any open source agreement statement. After evaluation, the team forked the project and developed it as an independent project.
On January 2, 2026, the original author of the project added the GPLv3 agreement to it in Commit. Since we did not continue to merge the subsequent code of the original project, we were unable to pay attention to this protocol change in time.
The official mentioned that although our fork code behavior occurred before the project added a clear open source agreement, we fully respect and understand the original author's ownership of the project and its agreement choice. We will remove this translation project from the new version of Tabbit Browser and have fully open sourced the project https://github.com/Tabbit-Browser/read-frog for community review and use, giving back to the open source community with practical actions.
