During the 2026 World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC 2026), HMD announced that it will introduce a number of modern smartphone functions to its feature phone product line in the next few months, including digital wallets, AI assistants, and video calling services, aiming to expand digital access capabilities for users in underdeveloped connected areas around the world. The first key markets will be targeted in India, and will be rolled out to more countries and regions in 2026.

HMD stated that its digital wallet service will provide feature phone users with safe and convenient cross-border and local fund transfer capabilities, support the reception, storage and withdrawal of funds through the local payment system, and ensure account security through device-side security mechanisms and PIN code protection. This service is planned to be launched in India in the first half of this year, and then gradually expanded to other markets. The digital wallet was developed by HMD in partnership with fintech company Kivi3 and blockchain enterprise Polygon Labs.
On the AI front, HMD will bring voice-driven smart experiences to upcoming feature phone models and collaborate with India's Sarvam AI to develop dedicated AI assistants. Users can complete basic operations such as making calls, setting alarm clocks, and turning on flashlights through voice. They can also get an AI chat experience for daily simple question and answer scenarios.
In addition to the general AI assistant, HMD will also try to launch an AI companion pilot project for elderly users, working with InTouch to create services that focus on emotional companionship and daily interaction. The project is expected to launch pilot testing in Europe first, and then gradually promote it globally.
In terms of communication and social experience, HMD also plans to improve the video and messaging performance of feature phones through the new Xpress Chat application. The new application will use the front camera to realize video calls and video conferencing, and support voice messages, group chats and photo sharing, making traditional feature phones closer to the smartphone experience in terms of communication form.
