Recently, a three-vehicle rear-end collision occurred on the Yangzhou section of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway. The driver, Duan, used autonomous driving after drinking alcohol and drove more than 100 kilometers while sleeping on the highway, causing a series of rear-end collisions with multiple vehicles. The night before the incident, Duan had a meal and drinks with friends in Changzhou. In the early morning of the next day, he suddenly decided to drive back to his hometown in Henan.

After the vehicle entered the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, Duan relied on turning on the intelligent assisted driving function, ignored safety regulations, dozed off in the driver's seat, and took his hands off the steering wheel.

When the vehicle traveled near the 965km upline of the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, the system automatically exited the assisted driving mode because it could not detect the driver's hand control for a long time.

The vehicle immediately lost control and stopped directly in the second lane (travel lane) of the highway.

Xu's vehicle coming from behind was unable to avoid the situation and violently rear-ended Duan's stationary vehicle, causing Xu and two passengers in the car to be injured.

A few minutes later, a third vehicle driven by Huang rear-ended Xu's vehicle, causing serious damage to three vehicles and multiple injuries.

After the accident, the police investigation found that the alcohol content in Duan's blood was as high as 99.3mg/100ml, far exceeding the drunk driving standard.

The public security organs revoked Duan’s motor vehicle driving license in accordance with the law and stipulated that he should not apply for a new one within five years.

Subsequently, after the procuratorate launched a public prosecution, the court held that Duan drove a motor vehicle on a public road while drunk, and his behavior had endangered public safety and constituted the crime of dangerous driving.

In the end, Duan was sentenced to detention for one month and 15 days and fined RMB 4,000.
