U.S. tech giant Meta has postponed the release of its artificial intelligence model, codenamed "Avocado," from this month to at least May, according to people familiar with the matter.

While the company is investing heavily to expand its AI ambitions, including developing a roadmap for its own chips, the timeline for its AI projects remains delayed. In January this year, Meta announced its annual capital expenditure plan with the goal of achieving "superintelligence" - the vision of artificial intelligence surpassing human intelligence.

Sources say the new model, which Meta spent months developing, performs poorly compared to the latest offerings from competitors.

Sources also said that Meta AI leadership has discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing Google Gemini to support the company's AI products, but no decision has been made yet.

It was reported in December that Meta was developing a text AI model codenamed Avocado, which was scheduled to be released in the first quarter.
