Recently, "Overwatch 2" announced a new winter Christmas event, but it caused dissatisfaction among many players. The pass for this event allows players to obtain redemption tickets through play, which can be used to redeem various skins, appearances, accessories, action expressions, etc. Players can earn tickets every 9 games they play, however there is a weekly cap on ticket acquisition. Even if players purchase the paid premium version of the pass (which allows for additional redemption tickets), they will not be able to obtain all items.
The premium pass for the winter event costs $5, and players can only select up to 4 items. To get the remaining cosmetics, players must go to the store and purchase additional bundles - priced at 30 yuan.
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), also known as "Fear of Missing Out", is a common "promotion" method in games and reality. This is why many games have "limited time" items and props, making players feel like they are being forced to consume. This is why Blizzard's approach has been criticized by many players.
However, players' dissatisfaction became more serious because of the comments made by Blizzard developers. Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss tweeted: "4 legendary skins for only $5 (even though some of them are just old skin recolors), to me, that totally fits the holiday spirit."
Not only that, he also said that he was puzzled by the dissatisfaction of players. In a recent interview with Twitch streaming channel SVB, Neuss said he was "a little surprised" by the response from players. "It makes sense when you think about it like this: We want to give players more choice... the goal is, 'If an event is similar to what we have now, but you end up being able to choose what you want,'" he said. While the event offered a similar number of rewards as other seasonal events, he admitted that the team was "misleading" in the way it presented the rewards.
"The way we present it is: we lay everything out and you can't get everything, so people get frustrated... You get a lot of feedback before and after people experience it. Sometimes the feedback will be the same, sometimes not." Neuss said that player feedback will really help the team in the future.
But he still insisted: "I still think this model is generous - you can get four skins for $5, which is much better than what you usually get - but we have to listen to what makes the Overwatch community unique."
