Apple has acquired video editing startup MotionVFX, which provides plug-ins, templates and visual effects tools that work with Apple's Final Cut Pro. MotionVFX said on its website on Monday local time: "We are very excited to announce that MotionVFX will join the Apple team to continue to help creators and editors perform at their best. From the beginning, we have always adhered to the pursuit of quality, ease of use and excellent design. These are also the core values that we admire most about Apple products, and we are happy to work together to put these concepts into practice."
Apple declined to comment or disclose terms of the deal.
Founded in 2009, MotionVFX offers Final Cut Pro video editing packages starting at $29 per month. The acquisition will allow Apple to integrate MotionVFX's functionality directly without relying on third-party extensions.
The move could help Apple better compete with Adobe Premiere Pro and increase user subscriptions as it continues to reduce its reliance on devices. Apple's services business, which includes subscriptions like iCloud, Apple Music and its suite of apps, typically has higher profit margins than its hardware business like the iPhone.
In March this year, Apple launched a subscription service called Creator Studio, which packages popular creative applications such as Final Cut Pro into subscription packages for $12.99 per month or $129 per year. The service competes with software suites such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
Apple has long avoided large-scale acquisitions, instead acquiring numerous smaller companies to acquire their talent and technology and integrate them into existing products.
