Mozilla recently announced that the desktop version of Firefox browser will receive a batch of new feature updates in the upcoming version 149. The most notable of which is a completely free built-in VPN service, which also includes split-screen browsing, smart windows, tab notes and many other productivity-enhancing improvements.

This new built-in VPN will be integrated directly into Firefox without the need for users to download a separate app or install a third-party extension. It will hide the real IP address by directing the user's network traffic to a secure proxy to resist all types of online tracking. However, in the initial launch stage, the VPN is only available to users in the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Germany, and has not yet covered the global market. Mozilla said that the company is very aware that "free VPNs" are often accompanied by privacy risks, so this service is based on its strict data principles, emphasizing that it will not compromise user privacy through opaque data trading models, hoping to continue its positioning as the "most trustworthy browser."
Even though it's a free service, this built-in VPN comes with a usage threshold: a monthly data limit of 50GB. This means that users can get an extra layer of security and anonymity in daily browsing, online banking or public Wi-Fi scenarios, but if it is used as the main channel for long-term HD video streaming or large-capacity downloads, it is likely to quickly hit the data limit.
In addition to VPN, Mozilla also announced that the existing AI Window feature will be upgraded and renamed, and the new feature will appear in the form of Smart Window. This function is mainly aimed at multi-tasking and information processing scenarios. It can quickly generate web page summaries, compare different product information, etc. in the browser, complying with the current trend of AI assistants being introduced into various software. For users who don’t like AI functions, Firefox still provides a simple and direct switch that allows you to turn off generative AI-related functions with one click, so that users can freely choose an experience that is closer to their preferences.
The new version of Firefox 149 will also officially join the native Split View mode, which allows users to open two different web pages side by side in the same browser window to improve efficiency when reviewing information, comparing documents, or making cross-site comparisons. At the same time, Mozilla also introduced the Tab Notes tool, which allows users to record short notes directly in the current tab page without relying on additional note-taking applications, allowing users to instantly organize their thoughts or excerpt key points while browsing information.
At the interface level, Firefox 149 will also bring a visual refresh and introduce a new browser mascot Kit to coordinate with the major interface redesign currently being carried out to create a more modern and recognizable overall image for users. According to the schedule announced by Mozilla, Firefox 149 for PC will be pushed out gradually starting from March 24, and is expected to reach supported platform users within a few weeks.
