Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are advancing the sequel project of "Minecraft: The Movie". According to people familiar with the matter, Kristen Dunst has confirmed to join and will play the popular character Alex in the game.

Kristen Dunst became a household name after playing the role of Mary Jane in the original "Spider-Man" trilogy.
Jared Hess, who directed the first Minecraft Movie, will continue to direct and co-write the script with Chris Galletta. Exact plot details for the sequel are currently being kept under wraps.

The addition of Dunst adds even more star power to this sequel. Cast members previously confirmed to return or join include Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge. Among them, Jack Black played the iconic character "Steve" in the first film.
The sequel will be co-produced by Mary Parent, Kyle Boyt, Roy Lee and other producers, and the first star Jason Momoa will also serve as one of the producers.

"Minecraft: The Movie" performed astonishingly after its release in 2025: it earned US$163 million in the first weekend in North America, setting a record for the highest opening of the year; the cumulative global box office approached US$1 billion, firmly ranking second in the global box office in 2025. This achievement also once again confirms the commercial potential of game-adapted movies - following the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series and HBO's "The Last of Us", game IP has become Hollywood's new gold mine after superheroes.

It is reported that this untitled sequel to "Minecraft" has been scheduled for July 23, 2027, and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
