On March 26, Bloomberg reported that Elon Musk said on Wednesday that his AI company xAI plans to upgrade its AI video generator to seize the market gap left by competitor OpenAI’s decision to discontinue its Sora product this week. "The next release of Grok Imagine, xAI's video generation tool, is going to be really exciting," Musk said Wednesday at X. "We're doubling down on our investment."

Additionally, Musk shared a series of AI videos generated by the Grok chatbot on Wednesday.He seeks to compete with ChatGPT and other chatbots by allowing users to quickly create lifelike images and videos, among other features.At a staff meeting attended by Musk in February, the Grok Imagine video product was described as one of xAI’s four core areas.
OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it is shutting down its Sora video application, a decision that could create opportunities for other competitors such as xAI, Runway AI Inc. and Google.However, OpenAI’s move has also raised questions about the cost and return of AI video services.
The Sora app is free and quickly topped the Apple App Store rankings after its release at the end of last year, but has since declined.Like other AI video generators, Sora requires a lot of computing power to run.
