In order to solve the problem of charging new energy vehicles, Chengdu has innovatively launched a convenient measure to install charging piles on street light poles.More than 600 roadside charging piles in the main urban area have been basically installed and are undergoing commissioning and acceptance. It is expected to be fully online before the end of April this year, allowing citizens to conveniently replenish energy when parking at night.

This street light charging pile project accurately addresses the pain points of old residential areas such as insufficient power capacity and lack of fixed parking spaces.

As of June 2025, the number of new energy vehicles in Chengdu has reached 1.08 million, and citizens' demand for public charging facilities continues to rise.

However, many old communities that were built earlier have common problems such as limited power capacity and lack of fixed parking spaces. They cannot meet the installation conditions of private charging piles, making it very inconvenient for car owners to charge nearby.

These charging piles operate on the redundant load of street lights and do not occupy additional resources.

Previously, street lamps were transformed into LED lamps to release excess power. Charging piles and street lamps share a power supply system. The power of a single lamp is 7 kilowatts. It is a slow charge, has little impact on the power grid, and does not affect the city's lighting function at all.

Each light pole is equipped with two charging guns. Citizens only need to scan the code when the street lights are on to use them. The operation is simple and convenient.

In terms of charging, the project party stated that electricity fees will be charged according to the peak and valley electricity prices of the power grid, and the service fees will be lower than the average market price.
