When buying a car at this stage, should you consider a manual transmission or an automatic transmission? And in our domestic market, manual transmissions are generally used as low-end models and are cheaper. But BMW's manual transmission cars are more expensive than automatic transmissions. Can you imagine? Regarding the fact that the European standard G87 BMW M2 manual transmission is more expensive than the automatic transmission, Frank van Meel, head of BMW M department, recently explained in an interview.
Frank van Meel said: Developing a manual transmission in a "sea" of automatic transmissions requires additional development costs. It would be much easier if every car had an automatic transmission instead of putting extra effort and money into smaller models.
At the same time, BMW executives said, "Manual transmission is slow, has high fuel consumption, and sometimes has a lower top speed. Therefore, from an engineering perspective, manual transmission actually has no meaning."
In fact, what BMW executives said is true. When the automatic transmission technology was not mature enough, the fuel consumption of automatic transmission was actually higher than that of manual transmission. But now, automatic transmission technology has evolved rapidly. In terms of gear selection and shift timing, the efficiency and power connection level have far exceeded that of manual transmission. Therefore, automatic transmission is also more fuel-efficient.
Today, car owners who still choose to drive manual transmissions not only like shifting gears, but also have feelings. So, do you prefer to drive a manual transmission or an automatic transmission?
