At the 20th Russian Venture Capital Forum in Kazan, Tupolev, a subsidiary of the United Aviation Manufacturing Group (UAC), a subsidiary of the Russian state technology group Ross Technology, publicly displayed the model of the long-range wide-body passenger aircraft project it is studying - the Tu-454 - in an informal format for the first time.

According to information disclosed by the Russian Center for Strategic and Technical Analysis, this new model is positioned as a long-range wide-body civil aviation passenger aircraft of the same level as the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" and Airbus A350 XWB, and is expected to become one of the models competing with the two giants in the future civil aviation market.

The Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 are today's flagship long-range wide-body airliners in the global civil aviation industry. The Boeing 787 first flew in 2009. The body structure of the Boeing 787 accounts for about 50% of composite materials, which can reduce fuel consumption by about 20%–25% compared with the previous generation model. Its cabin uses large-size windows and is equipped with electronic dimming functions. It also increases the air humidity in the cabin, thereby reducing the fatigue of passengers on long-distance flights. The Airbus A350 XWB first flew in 2013. The proportion of composite materials used has further increased to about 52%, and it is equipped with the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine, which is one of the most efficient engines at present. Both types of passenger aircraft can typically carry about 250–350 passengers and can fly up to about 15,000 kilometers without refueling.

Information disclosed at this stage shows that the Tu-454 plans to use two new-generation PD-26 turbofan engines under development as power. The aircraft’s detailed technical parameters, development schedule, and formal project approval and production schedule have not been announced to the public, and United Aviation Manufacturing Group has not yet issued official comments on this.

At present, the outside world can only make a preliminary judgment on the positioning and potential performance of the Tu-454 from the model displayed in Kazan and the limited official introduction: from the perspective of market level and range capabilities, the aircraft is clearly aimed at the long-range wide-body passenger aircraft market segment where the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 are located, and is intended to fill the long-term absence of the Russian civil aviation industry at this level. Driven by the new generation of large aerospace engines such as the PD-26, the Russian industry hopes to rebuild its competitiveness in the field of wide-body long-range mainline passenger aircraft through projects such as the Tu-454. However, judging from the current public information, the Tu-454 is still in the concept and model stage, and there is still a long way to go before prototype manufacturing and test flight. Its future development will also depend on various factors such as engine development progress, complete machine design finalization, and industrial chain supporting capabilities.
