Market analyst Matthew Ball released a set of alarming data in his 2026 gaming industry report: Since 2021, Roblox has contributed more than 60% of the net growth in consumer spending in the global gaming industry (excluding the Chinese market).

Obviously, in the eyes of Roblox, this result is only a novice level. Today, Roblox officially announced a new subscription plan, Roblox Plus, which officials said "aims to provide users with higher value." However, its many functions hide some controversial commercialization routines.

Roblox launches new subscription service Roblox Plus, details announced

Roblox Plus will be officially launched on April 30, and will replace Roblox’s existing Roblox Premium subscription service. Subscribers can enjoy a 10% price discount when using the platform's virtual currency Robux for consumption. After three consecutive months of subscription, the discount will increase to 20%. Roblox stated on its official website that the difference in discounts will be borne by the platform, so "the income that creators receive from each user's purchase will be completely consistent with current standards."

Plus subscribers also get "free and unlimited" access to private servers, even for games that would have required each player to pay Robux to open a private server. In addition, subscribed users can waive transaction fees when transferring Robux to other players. If you have doubts about this, Roblox officials clearly add: "Users must complete age verification and be over 18 years old before they can perform Robux sending and receiving operations without parental permission."

Like the Premium subscription service that will be offline soon, the Plus subscription will also open up users to the ability to buy and sell items in the Roblox trading market. However, the service no longer includes the original fixed monthly Robux benefits in the Premium subscription, and also cancels the 10% additional Robux reward when additional Robux is recharged.

Existing Roblox Premium subscribers can keep their original subscriptions, but starting from May 30, they will lose the 10% bonus when they top up Robux. Although Roblox said that it will launch optional additional gift packages "shortly after the Plus subscription goes online", and users can pay extra to obtain a fixed monthly amount of Robux, this also means that players who originally only wanted to obtain a fixed amount of Robux on a monthly basis will have to pay higher fees than before - and the Robux consumption discounts brought by the Plus subscription cannot immediately offset this additional expenditure.

In order to make up for the loss of income that may be caused to creators due to the free use of paid private servers for all platform games by Plus subscribers, Roblox announced the corresponding compensation rules: "If a Roblox Plus subscriber plays a cumulative 60 minutes or more in a paid private server of a game within 30 days, the creator of the game can receive up to 100 Robux in revenue." At the same time, Roblox has made it clear that the platform will only distribute this revenue to the 5 private servers with the longest play time for each Plus user - this rule is likely to encourage creators to design games that bind players' attention and play time as much as possible.

Roblox Plus also allows creators to add pop-ups to their games to guide players to subscribe to Roblox Plus. If the creator successfully guides the player to complete the subscription, Roblox will issue a "promotion reward" of 250 Robux to the creator every month for the first three months of the player's subscription.

In the API development documentation of Roblox, the official also provides a sample script: when the player character interacts with the game object mounted with this script, the Roblox Plus subscription guidance window will pop up. Players who complete the subscription will "immediately receive the corresponding rewards and be transported to the exclusive game area."

Roblox said in the announcement: "For users who want a richer experience on the platform and creators who are looking for more monetization channels, Roblox Plus has opened up a new path. And this launch is just the beginning."
