recently,Hefei, Anhui has launched a non-motor vehicle exclusive signal light coverage project, which will be put into use at 78 intersections in the city in 2026 to solve the safety hazards of electric bicycles and motor vehicles mixing and rushing. The exclusive signal lights for non-motor vehicles were deployed by the Hefei Public Security Traffic Control Department. They are equipped with straight ahead, left turn instructions and blue prompt boards, and operate synchronously with the motor vehicle signal lights.
Judging from the supporting signs, the blue prompt board on the left is marked with arrows for non-motorized vehicles to go straight and turn left, while the signal light on the right uses a bicycle pattern with arrows to indicate the direction of travel, clearly demarcating the right of way for non-motorized vehicles.
Previously, electric bicycles often mixed with motor vehicles at intersections, and were easily affected by straight-going vehicles when turning left. Not only were the traffic rules unclear, but they also frequently caused collision accidents, making it difficult to ensure the safety of cyclists.
After the exclusive signal light is activated, non-motorized vehicles can pass independently according to the exclusive signal. The straight and left-turn paths are clear, and there is no need to compete with motor vehicles.
This facility enables non-motorized vehicles to "exclusively cross the street and turn left once". Exclusive waiting areas and diversion lines are simultaneously set up at intersections. Non-motorized vehicles can complete a one-time left turn or go straight along the dedicated area during the green light period without interfering with motor vehicles or pedestrians during the entire process.
At present, key intersections such as the intersection of Huizhou Avenue and Yangtze Middle Road, and the intersection of South Second Ring Road and Ningguo Road have been put into use, effectively reducing dangerous behaviors such as "ghost probes", which not only standardizes cycling behavior, but also improves intersection efficiency.
