Daniel Moreno-Gama, a Texas man, is facing multiple federal charges for allegedly traveling across state lines to California in an attempt to kill OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
On April 10, he tried to break into OpenAI's headquarters after throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman's San Francisco home, prosecutors said. At the entrance to the headquarters, he tried to smash the glass door with a chair and claimed he was "here to burn the building down and kill anyone inside," according to charging documents.

According to information released by the U.S. Department of Justice, Moreno-Gama was charged with "attempting to damage and destroy property by explosives" and "possession of an unregistered firearm," which carry maximum prison terms of 20 and 10 years respectively. San Francisco police found multiple suspected incendiary devices, a barrel of kerosene and a lighter on his person.
Police also seized a document titled "Your Last Warning" from Moreno-Gama. The Justice Department said he also emailed a similar version of the document on April 10 to someone at a university in Texas where he attended. The three-part series of documents, written by himself, focuses on his strong opposition to artificial intelligence and to executives from multiple AI companies, including “Victim 1,” Altman.
Excerpts from the indictment show that the first part of the document is titled "Your Last Warning" and signed by "Daniel Moreno-Gama." In this section, he claimed that he had "killed/attempted to kill" Victim 1 and wrote: "If I am going to call others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and demonstrate that I am completely sincere about my message." He also listed the names and addresses of board members, CEOs, and investors of multiple AI companies.
The second part of the document is titled "Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction" and focuses on what he believes is the existential risk that artificial intelligence poses to humanity. The third part is a letter written to Victim 1, titled “To [Victim-1’s name] if you make it” (To [Victim-1’s name] if you make it). The letter reads: “If you are lucky enough to survive, I will regard this as God’s will and give you a chance to atone...”.
The case is still ongoing, and Moreno-Gama will face further judicial proceedings at the federal level regarding the attacks on Altman personally and OpenAI headquarters.
