Anthropic published a new support article this week introducing the authentication mechanism that Claude may trigger. The company said that ensuring the responsible use of powerful technologies starts with understanding who is using these AI services. Authentication mechanisms help Anthropic prevent abuse and meet legal obligations.

At this stage, some usage scenarios of Claude may trigger the identity verification mechanism. If the user encounters the identity verification link, he or she needs to submit documents for verification. After verification, they can continue to use related functions. If they fail to pass the verification, they will be restricted from using certain functions of Claude.
The identity verification function is performed by Persona Identities. Anthropic promises that the documents submitted by the user will only be used for verification purposes. The specific data storage time and usage mechanism are controlled by Anthropic, and the data is only saved on the Persona Identities server.
What you need to prepare before verification:
After triggering verification, users need to take photos of physical documents for verification. They need to take real-time photos through mobile phone cameras or other web cameras. Submitting photos or copies of existing documents is not supported.
Documents that can be submitted for verification include but are not limited to: national ID cards, passports, driver's licenses, etc. Legal identity certificates issued by governments of most countries or regions can be used.
Things that are not supported for verification include but are not limited to: copies, screenshots, scans, photos, digital IDs, and non-government-issued documents such as student IDs, work IDs, employee IDs, and bank cards.
Data protection and control instructions:
Anthropic, as the verification data controller, will establish the usage rules and retention period of the data, and Persona will process and save the data on the server according to Anthropic's instructions.
ID documents submitted by the user andselfieThese verification records will be collected and preserved by Persona, and Anthropic will access these verification records through the Persona platform when necessary, but Anthropic itself will not facilitate or store these document images.
Anthropic will not use authentication data to train models, nor will it collect more information than necessary. Users’ identity data will not be shared with any third parties, and the data will not be used for marketing, advertising, or any purpose unrelated to authentication.
Why was my account banned after submitting for verification:
Anthropic may ban user accounts for various reasons, such as repeated violations of the usage policy, creation of accounts from unsupported countries or regions, violation of terms of service, registration and use of accounts by minors.
In this case, the account may be blocked even after submitting identity verification. Anthropic also provides an account unblocking mechanism. If the user's account is blocked by mistake, you can click here to submit an appeal form.
