A French man recently spent 100 euros to buy a lottery ticket and won the grand prize: a Picasso masterpiece "Portrait of a Woman" with a market value of 1 million euros. The lucky man, 59, a software engineer in Paris, got the surprise in a charity raffle held by Christie's auction house.
When informed of the news over the phone, he told event organizers: "It's unbelievable. I didn't even expect to win."
It is understood that the "100 Euros for a Picasso" lottery started in 2013, aiming to give participants the opportunity to win an authentic Picasso to support charity.
This is the third edition of this event, and a total of 120,000 tickets were sold in the raffle.
Christie's auction house will donate 1 million euros from the 12 million euros in ticket sales to a gallery that collects the Picasso painting, and the remaining proceeds will be donated to a French foundation aimed at helping patients with Alzheimer's disease.
