At the ongoing 2026 Beijing International Auto Show, a significant trend has attracted industry attention: the once popular fully hidden door handles are quietly withdrawing from the stage, and mechanical door handles and semi-hidden designs have begun to return on a large scale.On-site observation showed that most of the new models on display no longer blindly pursue the hidden effect of minimalism. This change is not an accidental change in aesthetic trends, but stems from the country's latest norms and mandatory requirements for automobile safety standards.
On February 2 this year, the mandatory national standard "Technical Requirements for Safety of Automobile Door Handles" was officially released. This standard clearly prohibits pure fully hidden door handle designs, aiming to solve the extreme safety hazard of being unable to pop out the door handle after a vehicle accident, resulting in hindered rescue.
According to the implementation schedule of the new regulations, this requirement will gradually take effect for newly developed models from January 2027 to January 2028. By January 2029, all models in production, including existing facelift models, must comply with this safety specification.
Many car company insiders said at the auto show that although hidden door handles can reduce slight wind resistance and enhance the sense of technology, they must make concessions in the face of safety. At present, major manufacturers have started design adjustments for subsequent models and are gradually phasing out fully concealed solutions.
Future car design will pay more attention to the balance between practicality and safety. Semi-hidden door handles are gradually becoming the mainstream research and development direction of car companies because they not only retain certain low wind resistance characteristics, but also provide a reliable mechanical and physical opening method in emergencies.
The introduction of this standard marks that the domestic automobile industry is returning from excessive pursuit of technology premiums to a people-oriented safety bottom line. Consumers will also see more design solutions that take both aesthetics and emergency reliability into consideration when purchasing cars in the future.
