Recently, electricity spot market prices in five southern provinces and regions, including Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan, have experienced a periodic upward trend, triggering heated discussions on the Internet.Among them, the average spot price in Guangdong has the most significant increase in the short term. Many netizens mistakenly believe that the cost of living electricity will be pushed up and express concerns about the burden on families.

The relevant person in charge of the Guangzhou Electric Power Trading Center said that the recent electricity spot market prices have shown a moderate upward trend, with large increases on individual days. The so-called electricity spot market refers to the "buy now and sell now" market for electricity consumption and power generation - companies with electricity needs can place orders one day or even hours in advance, and power generation and transmission companies arrange production and transmission accordingly.

According to China Southern Power Grid, todaySince the end of March this year, driven by the rebound in foreign trade, business orders have increased and electricity demand has increased. Data show that since April, the cumulative electricity consumption of the entire southern region has reached 87.08 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 14.0%.

At the same time, affected by the dry season in the southwest and rainy weather in the south, the average daily power generation of hydropower has dropped by 23% since April compared with March; the average daily power generation of Guangdong's new photovoltaic energy has decreased by about 20% during some periods. From the perspective of installed capacity structure, hydropower installed capacity in the southern region accounts for about 20%, and new energy installed capacity has exceeded 40%, and the two account for about 60%. However, because power generation is significantly affected by seasonality (a higher proportion in flood seasons and a lower proportion in dry seasons), market transaction prices fluctuate accordingly.

How long will this price increase last? The peak period of summer electricity consumption is about to enter. How to spend the summer during the peak period? Will residents’ electricity consumption be affected?

According to the relevant person in charge of China Southern Power Grid, the power market is divided into medium and long-term markets and spot markets. The overall spot market accounts for a relatively small amount and has limited impact on power users. It is expected that before the hydropower floods in western China begin in mid-June, the power supply in Guangdong and the region will still be under periodic pressure. High spot electricity prices may continue for a period of time, but the power supply is generally sufficient.

It should be noted that residential and agricultural electricity consumption is not affected by price fluctuations in the electricity market, and electricity prices will not change.Chen Wei, deputy general manager of the Guangzhou Electric Power Trading Center, made it clear: "Resident and agricultural electricity use follows the catalog electricity price approved by the state. It has nothing to do with market changes. The price is stable and there is no need to worry."

During this year's peak summer season, China Southern Power Grid and State Grid will work closely together to provide power transmission support to areas with tight supply and demand through cross-operational power transactions to ensure stable and orderly power supply.
