Even though Super Mario Galaxy The Movie is less than a month out, it looks like Nintendo and Illumination are already gearing up for a third film, slated for release in 2028. VGC discovered that in the updated schedule released by Universal Pictures Spain's official website, "an unnamed event movie co-produced by Illumination Entertainment/Nintendo (April 2028)" was added, with a very specific release date: April 12, 2028.
Of course, this could be the next Super Mario movie after Super Mario Galaxy, or it could be the start of a new series like the rumored Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Metroid movies.
With the Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Mario Galaxy Movie both currently tops at the box office, with both films grossing well over a billion dollars, it's no wonder that Universal Pictures, Nintendo, and Illumination Entertainment are marking their calendars for the next movies they hope to release.
