Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said at the "Interactive Innovation Video Game Conference" in Las Vegas recently that the pricing of "Grand Theft Auto 6" (GTA VI) will be "very reasonable" and aims to provide players with value that matches the volume of content. There have been multiple rumors that this highly anticipated masterpiece may far exceed the current mainstream AAA game price of $70 to $80, causing players to worry about the potential "hundred-dollar" price.

When talking about consumer experience, Zelnick emphasized that how players feel about a product depends on "what they buy" and "how much they pay for it." Consumers need to feel that the content itself is amazing enough and the price is worthy of the experience. He bluntly stated that Take-Two's goal is to give players this "value for money" feeling in GTA VI.

At the same time, Zelnick also made no secret of the company's ambitions for this new work, saying that GTA VI will become "the most spectacular entertainment work on the planet." To a certain extent, this implies that the content scale and production investment of the game will be far greater than before, and also leaves room for possible high pricing. Zelnick also mentioned that the "real price" of video games has become cheaper over the years when factored in inflation, providing justification for higher selling prices from an industry perspective.

While he frequently emphasized "value" rather than "cheapness", his statement was also regarded as a cooling signal for rumors that the starting price exceeded $100. Industry opinion believes that Zelnick’s statement means that the price of the final version will most likely not reach three digits, but it is very likely to be slightly higher than the current standard price of most new AAA games. For players who are mentally prepared to face sky-high prices, if the final price stays at the $80 level, it may be regarded as a "good thing" in a certain sense.

The current pricing of AAA games has remained at $60 for a long time. It was not until the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series generations that many major manufacturers generally raised the initial price to $70. Nintendo has gone a step further and tested the $80 pricing strategy on some new games, such as those related to "Mario Kart"; Microsoft is also widely expected to adopt an $80 pricing strategy for future "Gears of War" and Bethesda series new games. If GTA VI chooses a higher price range, it will be at the forefront of this new round of industry price reshaping.

According to previous reports, Rockstar had begun preparations for the GTA VI project as early as 2014, but it was not officially confirmed that the game was being developed until 2022, after years of leaks, rumors, and speculation. The latest news is that the total production cost of GTA VI may be close to US$2 billion, which is expected to set a new record for the most expensive work in the history of the game, surpassing "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War", "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)" and "Genshin Impact" and other high-investment projects. Such a huge budget has also become one of the important reasons why the outside world expects its price to be higher than the traditional 3A standard.

According to existing public information, GTA VI is expected to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series platforms on November 26. Faced with players’ high sensitivity to price, Take-Two’s current stance on pricing issues is not only building momentum for the “epic” positioning of its products, but also trying to create a public opinion atmosphere of “high prices but not outrageous, expensive but valuable”. As for where the final price will fall, we still have to wait for Rockstar and Take-Two to give an official answer as the release approaches.
