Although major game companies have repeatedly declared that "the era of exclusivity is coming to an end" for many years, the latest industry analysis shows that unique first-party games are still the primary driving force for players to purchase consoles. According to data from Circana Research Institute, in the first quarter of 2026, about 41% of players surveyed listed “exclusive games” as the main reason for choosing a specific platform. Although this proportion is down 8 percentage points from last year, it is still far ahead of other factors.

The second-ranked reason for purchasing a console was “friends and family using the same console,” highlighting the importance of social connections in the gaming experience. However, exclusive content is still at the core of a considerable number of players' decisions.
Analysts pointed out that although Sony is actively porting first-party works to PC and Microsoft has been adjusting its exclusive strategy for a long time, players' interest in exclusive games has not subsided. In the competition between future platforms such as PS6, next-generation Xbox and new Nintendo consoles, exclusive content still carries the core expectations of players.
