On May 7, Musk announced on the X platform that his artificial intelligence company xAI would terminate its independent operations, merge into SpaceX as a whole, and officially change its name to SpaceXAI.

According to reports, the background of Musk’s statement was in response to a Tesla investor’s post about the signing of an agreement between SpaceX and Anthropic. The investor revealed that Anthropic will have access to more than 300 megawatts of computing power resources in SpaceX's Colossus 1 large data center, and said it has "expressed its intention to cooperate with SpaceX to develop several gigawatts of orbital AI computing power."

Musk’s core reason is that the earth cannot meet the energy needs of future AI. He predicts that within two to three years, the lowest cost of generative AI computing will be in space. He believes that AI's reliance on power-hungry data centers puts pressure on the power grid and the environment, and that the solution is to move the problem off-planet.

In February this year, SpaceX The acquisition of xAI through an all-stock transaction valued SpaceX at US$1 trillion and xAI at US$250 billion, setting a record for the highest valuation corporate merger in history. After the merger, xAI and social platform X were integrated into SpaceX, and it plans to launch an IPO in the middle of this year. Although xAI told employees at the time that it would not change its name in the short term, Musk's latest statement today made it clear that the new name of SpaceXAI will be used. After the merger, xAI emphasized that the company's mission remains unchanged and the valuation per share will remain at the original level.
