The Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday it had approved Boeing's plan to safely resume operations of the MD-11 aircraft in the United States. Previously, the agency suspended flights of this type of aircraft in December due to a fatal crash of a FedEx cargo plane in Kentucky in November that killed 15 people.

FedEx decided to retire its MD-11 fleet after the fatal crash, but FedEx said it plans to resume operations of the fleet later this month after its 28 MD-11 aircraft meet Boeing maintenance requirements.
