Apple officially released the iOS 26.5 system update yesterday, launching a new feature called "Suggested Places" in the map application, which is regarded as a preliminary step for advertising in Apple's map service in the future. Earlier news caused misunderstandings from the outside world, believing that advertisements have been launched within the app. However, judging from the current situation, Apple Maps still has not actually displayed any advertising content.

Apple began to "lay the foundation" for map ads as early as the iOS 26.2 testing phase, including adding relevant code to the system and testing the prompt page at startup. However, throughout the testing cycle and after the official release of iOS 26.5, no ads have actually appeared. In March of this year, Apple officially announced that it would introduce advertising services to its Maps app in the United States and Canada this summer.
According to Apple at the time, the launch time window for map ads was defined as “this summer.” From an astronomical seasonal perspective, summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins on June 21 and ends on September 22; while meteorologically, summer lasts from June 1 to the end of August. This means that Apple plans to push the Maps Ads feature to users in the United States and Canada at some point between June 1 and September 22, with the specific date depending on Apple’s actual definition of “summer.”
According to the disclosed information, ads will appear in maps in two forms in the future: one is embedded in the search result list, and the other is in the "Recommended Places" section added in iOS 26.5. This section will provide location recommendations based on nearby popular trends and the user's recent search history, and future ads will be displayed alongside this content.

On iPhone and iPad, in-map ads will be identified with a clear “Ad” label and presented similarly to ad slots in App Store search results. Merchants will compete for exposure to keywords or search terms through bidding, and the highest bidder will receive ad placements in related searches.
In terms of privacy, Apple stated that the location information used to display and interact with ads in the Maps application will not be associated with the user’s Apple account, and related data will not be shared with third parties. However, in the "Recommended Places" function, users currently cannot choose to turn off location-based or personalized ad recommendations, which also means that once the ads are officially launched, the relevant push will take effect by default.
