Euro-Office, an open source office software suite project jointly launched by a number of EU technology companies, will release its first stable version on June 9, 2026. This office suite is mainly used to completely replace Microsoft 365. Its code is completely open source and the main infrastructure is located in Europe. For Europe, this period is a key measure for digital sovereignty and independence, which can break away from dependence on foreign information technology providers.

Euro-Office includes a variety of packages to meet real-life needs:
Cloud disk function: This function complies with European regulations and jurisdictions, allowing users to reliably store files and meet privacy protection needs.
Document function: This function provides fast and compliant document creation and editing capabilities, with an experience similar to Microsoft Word and full compatibility.
Sheets: This feature provides secure, GDPR-compliant collaboration with a Microsoft Excel-like experience and full compatibility.
Presentation feature: This feature allows users to create professional slideshows/presentations with built-in multiple templates, animations, and team collaboration features.
Conversation function: Video conferencing software based on the EU's internal infrastructure, providing secure video call functions such as screen sharing, recording, and real-time collaboration.
Calendar features: Coordinate schedules, reminders, send invitations, and more. Data is also retained on European infrastructure and protected by GDPR regulations.
Email features: Euro-Office also offers an email client that provides GDPR compliant encrypted email communication services, clean and ad-free.
Based on existing open source office software:
This new EU office software is developed based on ONLYOFFICE and adopts the AGPL3.0 license. Euro-Office supports free download and use by users in the EU and around the world. At the same time, subsequent development and maintenance work will be completed by the sponsoring company and the open source community. For example, users can submit new functional requirements, contribute code to the project, submit problem feedback, etc.
As for why it is based on ONLYOFFICE rather than using this open source office software, the development team also gave an explanation: ONLYOFFICE had previously added independent additional terms to the project, causing it to be incompatible with any mainstream open source license regulations, such as prohibiting derivative versions from modifying the brand and prohibiting the use of related trademarks. This approach caused dissatisfaction among downstream developers, which may also bring other copyright risks.
Based on advice provided by the creators of the GNU AGPL license and legal experts, Euro-Office believes that the restrictive supplementary terms (conflicting parts) can be removed from the original project license during the redistribution process. This principle is clearly stated in Article 10 of the GNU AGPL License. Therefore, Euro-Office has the right to continue open source distribution in the product without the restrictive terms of the upstream project.
The EU’s main idea is to reduce its dependence on the United States:
In recent years, the EU has paid more and more attention to digital sovereignty and has implemented legal provisions such as GDPR to protect the digital privacy rights of EU users. However, office suites such as Microsoft 365 will continue to collect user usage information and transmit it to Microsoft servers in the United States. Although Microsoft emphasizes that the data transferred is desensitized, the EU still firmly believes that only software developed by itself is truly trustworthy, so there are now open source projects such as Euro-Office.
Through this project, EU government agencies, educational institutions and individual users can use it with confidence. Since the code is completely open source, institutions pursuing high security can even conduct private deployments, such as deploying all content related to cloud storage to their own servers. Therefore, Euro-Office is also a project worthy of attention for enterprises. After all, they can deploy and control their own data and the open source is free, which can reduce costs and improve security.
