Apple announced in its keynote speech at the 2026 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) held today that it will add a number of new AI photo editing features based on Apple Intelligence to the Photos photo application, including an upgraded "Cleanup" tool, a new "Extend" tool, and a new "Spatial Reframing" function.

Among them, the spatial reconstruction function allows users to re-adjust the framing and angle of the virtual lens after the photo is taken. Users can change the composition and perspective of the picture simply by touching and dragging. The system will use Apple Intelligence to automatically generate content and only fill in the blank areas after the perspective is moved, ensuring that the newly generated picture is consistent with the original scene.
Apple said that the cleaning tool in this update will receive a "significant upgrade" and will be more capable of removing interfering elements in the picture. Even in photos with complex scenes, it can generate more realistic and natural fill effects. At the same time, new extension tools help users add more background space to photos, or adjust the aspect ratio of images to suit different display needs.
Apple emphasizes that these three features are designed to help photography enthusiasts improve the quality of their photos while "respecting the original moment." All related processing is completed in the cloud relying on Apple's Private Cloud Compute (private cloud computing) infrastructure. Officials say that user data will still be strictly protected during this process. Additionally, these new tools will work not just with photos taken in the future, but also with older photos already in your camera roll, even images taken with non-Apple devices.
