Recently, Apple released a beta version of macOS 27 code-named “Golden Gate” for developers, but this update unexpectedly affected Asahi Linux running on Apple Silicon devices. The Asahi Linux project team has issued a public reminder to advise users not to try the macOS 27 beta on devices with Asahi Linux installed.
According to Asahi Linux, after upgrading to the macOS 27 beta version, the system startup menu and "startup disk" setting logic have changed, causing the Asahi Linux partition to no longer appear in the startup selection interface, making it impossible to boot into the Linux system normally. At present, this change will not cause data loss on the Asahi Linux partition. The partition itself still exists, but it cannot be selected or started under the existing boot path.
It's unclear if this is an unintended flaw introduced by Apple while tweaking the startup mechanism, or if it's an intentional change in behavior. The Asahi Linux team has submitted a bug report to Apple and is awaiting further response. During this period, the project team clearly reminds users to avoid upgrading the macOS 27 beta version on their main devices, especially users who rely on Asahi Linux for daily work or development.
For users who have tried to upgrade to the macOS 27 beta version, if they still have macOS 26 or earlier system installations on the same device, they can indirectly boot the Asahi Linux partition through the boot environment of these older versions of the system to continue to access the existing Linux environment during the transition phase.
In terms of other developments in the Apple Silicon Linux ecosystem, Linux 7.2 is ready to add startup support for Apple M3 devices, but at this stage there is still a long way to go before it can be used by ordinary end users. For users who have not yet upgraded to macOS 27 “Golden Gate”, this also means that while maintaining existing availability, you can still look out for improvements in support for Apple M-series chips in subsequent kernels and boot toolchains.
