Microsoft recently confirmed that it will remove the well-received Drop file sharing function in the new version of the Edge browser. Previously, Edge 149 has canceled the sidebar (Sidebar) and Collections (Collections). Behind a series of "downsizing" measures is Microsoft's strategic adjustment to fully shift resources to Copilot and browser AI transformation.

According to reports, although Edge's overall market share is limited, it has accumulated a group of loyal users by relying on a number of exclusive features that are not available on Chrome and Firefox, including sidebars that can run mini web applications on one side of the web page, and collections that facilitate organizing web content. In Edge 149, these two functions have been unified and "cleared". Microsoft said that the side area will be exclusive to Copilot to facilitate subsequent unified interaction design around AI.
Drop is the latest addition to the "offline list". It was once regarded as one of the best cross-device file and text synchronization tools on Edge. With Drop, users only need to drag and drop files or enter text in the desktop browser, and they can receive it instantly on other devices using the same account (including Android and iOS phones), without having to rely on Phone Link pairing or sending emails to themselves.

According to Microsoft, Drop's underlying storage relies entirely on OneDrive. Files will be automatically synchronized to the cloud after uploading, and download notifications will be issued on mobile phones and other devices. Users can upload larger files and if they run out of free OneDrive space, they can simply manually clean up old files to continue using them. Microsoft has emphasized that Drop will not compress or perform additional processing on files, which can theoretically reduce the risk of malicious interception of data during transmission. At the same time, it will not delete user files without authorization unless the user cleans them up themselves.

However, turning off the Drop function is not "completely insensitive". Microsoft popped up a prompt in the latest Canary version, clearly stating that "Drop is about to be retired" and reminding users that files shared through Drop in the past are still safely stored in OneDrive, but the content of text notes will not be automatically retained and needs to be exported separately. The new "Download Text" button in the browser interface will batch-package the clipboard text previously sent through Drop into a .txt file and save it. After the function is completely offline, these historical text records will no longer be accessible.
The successive "retirement" of Drop, sidebar, and collections reflects the changes in Edge's role within Microsoft: This browser is now included in the Microsoft AI business line and is unified and coordinated by the person in charge of Copilot. Management is more concerned about how to deeply integrate and strengthen AI capabilities in Edge. There have been previous signs that Microsoft is redesigning around the "Edge in the AI era" with the goal of further blurring the interface and interaction boundaries between Edge and Copilot.

Microsoft has publicly stated that Edge and Copilot will be more closely integrated in the future, and the browser's appearance and interaction will become closer and closer to the Copilot application itself. This is not just a simple overlay of AI functions, but an attempt to reversely transform Edge with Copilot's design system so that the browser's components, layout, and interactions can be reused in Copilot and other AI products, thereby forming a unified AI product experience foundation.
For Edge users who are accustomed to using Drop, sidebar, and collections, this round of "AI-first" product strategy means that a trade-off must be made between functional convenience and a new generation of AI experience. At present, Microsoft has not provided a direct alternative to Drop. Users can only rely on OneDrive, Phone Link or third-party tools to continue to synchronize files and text across devices, while Edge’s differentiated advantage is focused on the AI capabilities represented by Copilot.
