Google announced on Monday that the personalized Nano Banana-driven image generation feature in its Gemini app is now free and available to a wider user base in the United States. The feature, previously only available to paid Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, is now available to all eligible US users at no charge.

In April this year, Google stated that it would add image generation supported by Nano Banana to Gemini's "Personal Intelligence" capability, allowing users to create images that are more relevant to their own interests and preferences. Unlike traditional prompt word input, Gemini will automatically complete the preference information based on its understanding of the user's preferences, without the need for the user to re-describe in detail each time it is generated.

This understanding comes from data associated with the user's Google account, including information from services such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and search history. In actual use, the user does not need to fully list all preferences in the prompt word. For example, instead of “Draw me an illustration of my favorite things like coffee and baking,” the user can simply type “Draw me an illustration of my favorite things,” and Gemini will infer the elements of the user’s preferences from the relevant data.

In addition, Gemini can also retrieve user photos directly from Google Photos to generate images containing the user's image, without requiring users to manually upload personal photos again. Google said this helps lower the threshold of use and makes personalized image generation smoother and more natural.

Google launched Gemini’s “personal intelligence” feature earlier this year and made it widely available to U.S. users in March. Later, this feature was also expanded to users in India and Japan, allowing users in more regions to enable smart services based on personal data in Gemini. "Personal Intelligence" is an optional feature that requires users to actively turn on. Users can decide which applications and data sources Gemini can access.

When turned on, "Personal Intelligence" will be applied to every conversation and prompt by default, but users can also temporarily turn off this feature in a newly added switch in the Tools menu. Officials emphasized that this design aims to allow users to retain control over the scope of data access while enjoying the service.

In addition to the expansion of the image generation function, Google also announced a number of update plans for the Gemini application at the event in May this year, including a new "daily briefing" function, a redesigned interface, access to the AI video model Gemini Omni, and a personal AI assistant called Gemini Spark. These updates show that Google is continuing to strengthen Gemini’s product form at the application level to cope with pressure from competitors such as ChatGPT and Claude.

It is worth noting that Google’s AI chatbot Gemini has exceeded 750 million monthly active users this year, further consolidating its important position in the global generative AI market. Google's opening up of personalized image generation capabilities to free users in the United States is regarded by the industry as an important step in accelerating popularization and differentiated competition in AI product services.
