As overseas exports continue to increase, BYD is poised to regain the global pure electric vehicle sales crown from U.S. manufacturer Tesla. BYD delivered a total of 557,090 pure electric vehicles in the three months to June, according to data released on Wednesday. While that number is lower than the same period last year, it may be enough to overtake Tesla. Tesla is expected to report quarterly sales of about 396,500 vehicles next week, according to analyst forecasts.
BYD surpassed Tesla for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2024 and maintained a significant lead throughout 2025. At the time, Elon Musk's political activities and his close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump were disappointing consumers, especially in Europe.
However, Tesla regained the lead in the first quarter of this year. As weak market demand dragged down BYD's sales in the local market, Tesla sold more than BYD by about 48,000 vehicles in the quarter.
BYD's total sales of various types of new energy vehicles increased by 5.5% in June to 403,472 units. About 43% of its sales come from overseas markets, highlighting the importance of BYD's global expansion strategy.
With the auto market locked in a fierce price war, BYD is focusing on technology upgrades to compete with rivals such as Geely Automobile and Xiaomi Group.
