Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) officially issued an announcement on July 1, announcing that it will gradually close the digital store services of PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. This marks the end of nearly 20 years of digital content support for these two platforms.

Sony officially announced that the PS3 and PS Vita stores will be closed and services will cease in July 2027

According to an official statement from Sony, the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will cease operations in phases. Store services in most countries and regions will officially close in July 2027. However, some regions will lose access early - PS3 stores in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua will be the first to close in August 2026, while more countries in Latin America and the Middle East will also terminate PS3 store services before the end of 2026.

After the store is closed, players will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLC or other digital content through PS3 and PS Vita. However, Sony confirmed that content previously purchased by users can still be re-downloaded after closing, and existing game libraries will not be affected.

Sony explained in a statement that the decision stemmed from technical limitations of older hardware. As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to adapt to modern digital commerce standards - including newer payment processing and higher security requirements - the underlying architecture of PS3 and PS Vita is no longer able to meet the necessary support levels, making it impractical to continue operating the store.

Sony also emphasized that there are no plans to close the PlayStation Store for PS4. Even though the PS4 has been out for many years, the platform continues to receive support for new games and remains one of the most popular in the PlayStation ecosystem.

The announcement coincides with Sony's previously reported plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation titles starting in 2028. Together, the two decisions reflect Sony's broader strategic direction to invest more in modern digital infrastructure while phasing out support for legacy services. In addition, Sony is reportedly also increasing its focus on traditional console exclusive games.
