According to Kagoshima local media Minami Japan Broadcasting (MBC) citing the Japan Meteorological Observatory, the Ontake Volcano on Suwanose Island in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan erupted at around 3 pm local time on the 1st, with a smoke column erupting from the crater reaching a height of 1,600 meters.

The Japan Meteorological Observatory said that volcanic ash will be washed away from the southwest, and a small amount of volcanic ash is expected to fall on the island around 9 p.m. local time.
In addition, the area around the Suwanoseshima crater is still under a level 2 eruption alert, and the Japan Meteorological Observatory urges local residents within a radius of about 1 kilometer from the crater to be wary of large lava blocks.
