Despite being affected by continued protests and strikes by the Swedish IFMetall union and its allies, Tesla's Swedish branch still achieved an admirable performance in 2023, and its Model Y electric crossover became the best-selling model in Sweden in 2023. According to data from Car.infoSweden, the Swedish automobile industry statistics agency, Tesla's sales in Sweden in 2023 increased by 120% year-on-year, and its market share has also increased.
This performance of Tesla is impressive because the overall Swedish car market experienced a very difficult year in 2023, with car sales of approximately 280,000 units, a year-on-year decline.
A CarUp report noted that Tesla's market share in Sweden more than doubled in 2023. This shows that the electric car maker has stolen about 11,000 sales from other brands in the past year. It is worth noting that the combined number of new car registrations by Kia and Volvo in Sweden decreased by approximately 11,000 units.
IFMetall previously launched a series of strikes against Tesla's Swedish unit, and the union's allies also carried out sympathy strikes against the electric car maker. Because Swedish ports are blocked, Tesla cars cannot enter Sweden by sea, and the company cannot obtain registration plates through Postnord. Faced with these challenges, Tesla has adopted strategies to circumvent union protests.
Tesla's strategies have indeed paid off. Data released by Car.info shows that Tesla Model Y became the best-selling model in Sweden in 2023, with sales of 16,416 units last year. The Model Y beat popular models such as the Volvo XC40 and XC60, which had 13,661 and 11,669 registrations in 2023 respectively.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk congratulated the Swedish branch on its achievements and expressed his appreciation for the Swedish team. He said on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter): "Thank you to the excellent Tesla team in Sweden!"
