As NVIDIA's profits from AI hardware soar, many are concerned that the company may increasingly shift resources away from consumer-focused RTX graphics cards. So a leak of a previously unknown GPU could spark debate over whether it's an AI graphics card or a new RTX 40-series Titan, especially given its extremely high TDP rating.
A tracker listing NVIDIA's latest reference DEV_ID recently spotted a mysterious new GPU from the company. The listing provides little information on the role this product might play in NVIDIA's expanding product portfolio. The ID only shows the card's nickname "SkinnyJoe" and its 700WTDP power rating. While it's likely to be a new variant of the NVIDIA GPU, recent rumors about the RTX 40 series suggest other possibilities.
SkinnyJoe's power is comparable to the GH100AI chip, but less than the GH200's 900W. This could mean a scaled-down version of the H200, which is expected to be a significant improvement over the highly successful H100 when cloud providers start offering instance access in the second quarter of 2024.
NVIDIA may launch a "slimmed down" version of the H200 for Chinese customers to circumvent U.S. export restrictions. To that end, the company recently launched the RTX 4090D, which slightly reduces performance and limits overclocking.
However, "Skinny Joe" may also be an upgraded version of 4090, which has been rumored for some time. The latest information shows that this GPU may be named RTX4090Ti or TitanAda, with a TDP of 600W and a price of more than $2,000.
This four-slot giant GPU uses almost the entire AD102 chip area and is expected to have 18176 CUDA cores, 192 ROPs, 568 TMUs and 96MB L2 cache. These specs significantly exceed the standard 4090, which has 16,984 cores, 176 ROPs, 512 TMUs, 72MB L2 cache, and 450WTDP. There were previous rumors that NVIDIA had canceled the new Titan, but now it may be reinstated.
The upcoming release of the GeForce RTX 40 Super Series has only increased speculation. NVIDIA is expected to announce upgraded versions of the RTX 4080, 4070Ti, and 4070 on January 8, with releases planned throughout the month. Sources recently revealed to "Moore's Law is Dead" that the suggested retail prices of the 4070Super and 4070TiSuper will be US$599 and US$799 respectively, while the 4080Super may be priced at US$999 or higher. Therefore, NVIDIA may consider launching the 4090Super.
