OpenSUSE announced today that openSUSE Leap 16 will succeed Leap 15.6, setting a "clear direction" for openSUSE Leap: the new version will be based on the SUSE Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP) code base and will combine the advantages of advanced enterprise server distributions with the user-friendly maintenance and security of the Leap series.
The goal of Leap16 is to strike a balance between cutting-edge and traditional Linux operating systems as SUSE develops ALP and effectively integrates community packages.
The transition to Leap16 is more than just a numerical improvement, but represents a significant advancement in technology and user experience. The future of openSUSELeap is based on the innovative concept of SUSEAdaptableLinuxPlatform.
Over the past few years, SUSE has been developing the AdaptableLinuxPlatform for its next-generation operating system. OpenSUSELeap15.6 itself is to leave more time for the development of ALP. Today's announcement basically confirms that their ALP-based version of Leap will be named Leap16. Except that Leap15 has succeeded Leap42.3 in the past, this is foreseeable.
The current openSUSE roadmap page shows that Leap 15.6 will be released in June. openSUSE Leap 16.0 is currently expected to be released in 2025. So, if all goes well, it will be head-to-head with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 next year.
