Tesla has reportedly begun rolling out the V12 update of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to non-employee owners, nearly two months after it first rolled out the software to employees. However, Tesla is still pushing the beta version of FSDV12 to non-employee car owners, and the company's CEO Elon Musk has previously promised that V12 will "not be a beta version" when it is officially launched.
Tesla enthusiast WholeMarsCatalog said in a post on X that he had received the FSDV12 version. However, contrary to Musk's previous statements, the update is still being named "Beta."
Tesla's FSD is currently in Beta mode, which means it is still being tested and requires active driver supervision. Musk raised expectations last June when he said the V12 would no longer be a beta version, suggesting it would be fully autonomous by then. He has also previously said that V12 is reserved for FSD to become "end-to-end artificial intelligence."
In July last year, at the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Musk also spoke via video and said that Tesla was "very close" to achieving fully autonomous driving capabilities. "I've been wrong about this prediction in the past, but I feel like we're closer than ever before," Musk said at the time.
