Norwegian internet browser Opera today announced a new promotion to boost its market share, which currently stands at just under 3%. Opera users, as well as users of other competing browsers, can now apply to win a trip to the isolated island of Iceland. The prize is $10,000.
The choice of location was no accident. As part of a promotional campaign, Opera promoted one of its new features - "Tab Island". It allows opening websites in the tab bar to be grouped and collapsed into one tab. This feature is very useful, especially for those who keep billions of tabs open in their browser windows.
The campaign tells the story of a fictional Opera employee who lives on the island of Vestmannaeyjar, focusing on the browsing experience and sharing feedback with developers. He's leaving for vacation and you can fill his shoes within a week.
However, there’s not much to add other than a marketing-first pitch. If you're interested in the promotion and don't mind traveling to Iceland to spend some time in isolation, you can log on to Opera's website to apply.
The lucky winner will receive a prize, a round-trip ticket to Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, and transportation reimbursement to a house on Bianare Island.
There's one last bonus. The free seven-day stay is for two people, so if you want, you don't have to
There are no specific requirements for the winners, but applicants must answer a question about what tabfulness (a term used heavily in the opera's marketing communications) means to them.
The company said it will select contestants based on the creativity of their answers. In addition, applicants must attend an interview with the Opera team before being officially announced as a winner.
The competition ends on February 25 and Opera will announce the winner on X (Twitter) four days later.
