Abstract:
Asus officially confirmed on August 25 that the new handheld ROG Xbox Ally X20, launched in cooperation with Xbox, is priced at US$1,299 and will be available on October 15. Pre-orders are currently open. This device has undergone many refined upgrades based on the previous generation ROG Xbox Ally X, with the core focus on screen, control and body craftsmanship.
The X20 is equipped with a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED touch screen, refresh rate up to 120Hz, supports FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision HDR, peak HDR brightness reaches 1400 nits, covers 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and is equipped with anti-reflective coating. The OLED screen is regarded as the most significant and intuitive upgrade of the X20 compared to the previous generation.
In terms of core configuration, the X20 continues to use the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB LPDDR5X memory and 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, which is consistent with the previous generation Ally X priced at US$999.99. In other words, buyers won't experience a generational jump in pure performance. Other improvements include TMR joysticks, deformable cross keys, rounded face buttons, optimized shoulder keys and trigger keys, and rubberized grips. The body is made of black translucent material, and the redesigned cooling hardware inside is vaguely visible, supplemented by gold embellishments as the exclusive logo of the 20th anniversary edition. The 80Wh battery capacity remains unchanged.
ASUS simultaneously launched a package priced at US$2,499, including the handheld body and ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, customized dbrand Killswitch protective case, 68W adapter and Pelican Protector Case.
In terms of pricing, the X20 is about US$300 higher than the previous generation Ally X, but the processor, memory and storage remain unchanged. In addition, the X20 also reflects that the price of handheld consoles has far exceeded the price of traditional consoles. Although it is not positioned as a portable version of Xbox, its price of $1,299 is still $500 higher than the $799.99 optical drive version of Xbox Series
The anniversary design and optional AR accessories show that Asus is targeting core enthusiasts rather than mass market players this time. ROG Xbox Ally X20 will be delivered to players this fall. At that time, whether the improvements in screen and control can match its high price tag, there will be a more intuitive basis for judgment.
