Gurman criticizes Apple for opening iPhone Duo pre-orders early: knowing that production capacity is limited, it still rushes to launch

📅 2026-10-18

Abstract:

According to the latest disclosure by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, although Apple has long known that the iPhone Duo will encounter "severe supply constraints" due to challenges in the manufacturing process, the company still chose to open pre-orders for the new phone last Friday as planned, instead of waiting until the inventory is more fully prepared before launching it to the market. Gurman bluntly stated in the latest issue of the "Power On" newsletter that this decision was a "major mistake."

Gulman said that Apple obviously knew that the supply of new phones would be very tight, but it still pushed forward with the release plan. He believes that the company seems to value being able to bring products to market as early as possible in the first quarter of the new fiscal year rather than prioritizing meeting consumer needs. Such an arrangement would disappoint many of the product's early adopters who were most eager to buy it.

According to information revealed by Gurman, Apple initially planned to launch iPhone Duo only in the United States and China, and then gradually expand to other markets. However, Apple eventually changed its strategy and chose to launch pre-orders simultaneously in more than 70 countries and regions around the world.

The market demand for this new product far exceeds the supply capacity. According to reports, less than 30 minutes after pre-orders were opened, the iPhone Duo shipping time in most regions shown on Apple’s official website was quickly postponed to approximately January 25, 2027.

However, the report also pointed out that Apple has often adopted a relatively conservative strategy in estimating product delivery times in the past, and the actual delivery speed is sometimes faster than the originally announced timetable. Therefore, some consumers may still receive shipping arrangements earlier than currently expected in the future.
