Abstract:
Sony has announced that it will stop using optical drives in 2028, causing an uproar. Although it did not have any actual impact in the end, due to the many scandalous operations of PlayStation recently, there are endless voices on social media worried about the next-generation console PS6, and there are even many people who threaten to boycott PS6. At the same time, however, Xbox appears to be taking a different path.
Recent news indicates that Microsoft did not directly cancel the optical drive and notify users, but instead asked Xbox users if they wanted to retain the optical drive in the next-generation Helix console. This seems like a very smart move and proves that Xbox is at least listening to its users.
Xbox sent a survey to users asking if they would like to see related features added to future products. One of the questions is whether the next-generation Xbox should allow users to install games from physical discs.
We now know that millions of people still embrace physical media, even though its share is declining, and if the survey results reflect this, the Xbox Helix will likely come with a disc drive.
Previously, Xbox CEO Sharma also said that they hope to provide users with more choices, suggesting that Xbox will continue to use the disc model. If that's the case, and Xbox continues to maintain its exclusive game lineup, many players may choose Helix over PS6.
