Yang Lekun called the Roadster a fart car, and Musk responded: I fart at you.

Abstract:

Let’s first clarify who Yang Lekun is, otherwise it’s just nonsense. Yann LeCun, winner of the Turing Award, professor at New York University, and former chief AI scientist of Meta. The founder of artificial intelligence usually comments on technology and never saves face.

It started with the flying Roadster.

Musk posted first, with a video of a Roadster flying, and simply wrote: "It turns out that there will really be flying cars in the future."

After reading it, Yang Lekun replied: "Hydrogen peroxide?"

Once he figured out the principle, he got excited and immediately started to calculate the problem: "Okay, it turns out that it is compressed air, that is simpler. But the thrust is not good enough, less than 50 seconds. Even if half of the mass of the entire vehicle is compressed air, when the thrust-to-weight ratio is greater than 1, the useful thrust will not last for 10 seconds, probably closer to 5 seconds."

The implication is: this thing relies on jets to take off, and it can't take more than a few seconds. It's okay just for fun, but it's really a loser.

Musk's reply was very Musk. He only replied: "I fart in your general direction." followed by a fart emoji.

This sentence is a classic mocking line in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". The French soldier shouted "I fart in your general direction" to the English knight, followed by the absurd insult "Your mother is a hamster and your father smells like elderberries."

Yang Lekun took a look, good guy, you want me to eat your farts? He immediately upgraded his firepower and responded: "Coming out of a high-pressure stomach, your fart may push you up and forward. Think about it, isn't that how your car moves: a 700-bar, 600-liter, 3-second, very noisy fart. I hope there is no methane and those smelly compounds."

A "fart car" caused the Turing Award winner and the world's richest man to fart each other in the air. At this point, art has been completed.

The onlookers quickly followed. Someone sent a picture to Yang Lekun and said: "You will have to wear this from now on. You will be remembered as a fart brother now."

Yang Lekun didn't panic at all and replied: "I'm afraid that person will be Elon."

Some people were unconvinced and asked Yang Lekun whether he belittled the results because he hated Musk.

Yang Lekun simply wrote a long statement:

“I am definitely not against achievement and have never criticized real achievement, including Elon’s. I even own two Teslas.

I do expose marketing gimmicks that are cool on the surface but aren't the achievements they claim to be.

Compressed air thrusters may give you a boost of acceleration in any direction.

If you accept replacing the passenger seat with a 400-liter pressurized air tank, they might even allow your car to levitate for a few seconds. But they're not the path to true flying cars. ”

After reading Yang Lekun’s comments, Tesla senior engineer Yun-ta Tsai did not directly take sides, but told a story:

"Yang's comments about Roadster reminded me of another Stanford professor I had dealings with many years ago. They were very high up and theoretically very smart, but they just couldn't turn numbers into coherent atoms.

Their manufacturing knowledge comes from The Economist. When I visit the factory, I enjoy the VIP treatment accompanied by senior executives, while workers are busy nearby. They have no idea how atoms flow in production, nor how much ingenuity it takes to turn equations into reality and rely on choreographed coordinated actions.

The most powerful manufacturing engineers I have ever worked with were not Ivy League graduates, but the things they built were touching. They turn theoretical mathematics into reality and are the real magicians.

Staying at Tesla for a month, I learned more than what the top schools can teach. ”
