Sony is currently the only console manufacturer to offer a complete VR solution on both last- and current-generation systems. However, they have been only available on PlayStation consoles, cutting off its users from the plethora of VR games available on PC. However, that may change this year.

In a blog post announcing more games for PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR2), Sony quietly revealed that testing is currently underway to provide official PC-compatible support for the headset.

Sony said in a blog post today: "We're excited to share that we're currently testing the ability for PSVR2 players to access more games on PC to provide a wider variety of games beyond the PSVR2 games available through PS5. We hope to have this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates."

While a community project has been trying to hack PC support for the PSVR2 headset, this workaround will no longer be necessary once Sony provides direct support.

Unless Sony plans to launch its own VR market on PC, PlayStation VR2 headset users will certainly be able to play SteamVR and other games by plugging the hardware into their PCs, just like other VR users. Currently, it uses a straightforward plug-and-play design, plugging into the PlayStation 5 via a USB-C cable. It's unclear whether additional hardware or dongles will be required once PC support is implemented. It could also be a streaming solution.

This may also mean that Sony is planning to give up its exclusivity on PlayStation VR2 games and bring them to Steam to provide players with a brand new platform. Sony has been slowly bringing its exclusive games to PC for years, often years after the game launched. However, the recent slew of simultaneous multi-platform launches and their sheer success may change Sony's future plans.
