Micron reiterated its plan to begin mass shipments of its HBM3E memory in early 2024, and also revealed that Nvidia is one of its major customers for the new memory. At the same time, the company emphasized that its new product has received great attention from the entire industry, and hinted that Nvidia is likely not the only customer to end up using Micron's HBM3E.

Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on the company's earnings call: "The HBM3E product we launched has received strong attention and enthusiasm from customers."

Micron is at a disadvantage in the HBM market, with just 10% market share, and launching HBM3E (which the company also calls HBM3Gen2) ahead of rivals Samsung and SKHynix is a big deal for Micron. The company clearly has high hopes for its HBM3E, as this will likely put it ahead of its competitors (gain market share) and deliver a premium product (increase revenue and profits).

Normally, memory makers tend not to reveal the names of their customers, but this time Micron emphasized that its HBM3E is part of the customer roadmap and specifically mentioned NVIDIA as an ally. At the same time, the only product announced by NVIDIA to date that supports HBM3E is its GraceHopperGH200 computing platform, which uses the H100 computing GPU and GraceCPU.

"We have worked closely with our customers throughout the development process and are becoming a closely integrated partner in their AI roadmaps," said Mehrotra. "Micron HBM3E is currently in the qualification phase for NVIDIA compute products, which will drive the development of HBM3E-powered AI solutions."

Micron's 24GBHBM3E module is based on eight stacked 24Gbit memory modules and uses the company's 1β (1-beta) manufacturing process. These modules deliver date rates of up to 9.2GT/sec, bringing peak bandwidth per stack to 1.2TB/sec, a 44% improvement over the fastest HBM3 modules currently available. At the same time, the company will not stop at 8-Hi24Gbit-based HBM3E components. The company has announced plans to launch a higher-capacity 36GB 12-HiHBM3E stack in 2024 after starting mass production of the 8-Hi24GB stack.

The Micron CEO added: "We expect to begin volume production of HBM3E in early 2024 and achieve substantial revenue in fiscal 2024."
