According to KEDGlobal, at the 2023 Korea Investment Week (KIW) semiconductor conference held on September 11, Samsung and SK Hynix both expressed the view that driven by artificial intelligence, the demand for HBM memory chips will increase significantly. The marketing director of SK Hynix stated that an AI server requires at least 500GB of HBM high-bandwidth memory chips and at least 2TB of DDR5. SK hynix predicts that by 2027, the booming development of artificial intelligence will drive the HBM market’s compound annual growth rate to 82%.


Samsung Electronics' executive vice president of DRAM products and technology said that current HBM orders from customers have more than doubled compared with last year. In the future, HBM production, packaging and other capabilities will determine competitiveness. In addition, Samsung predicts that the HBM market will grow by more than 100% in 2024.

Currently, Samsung and SK Hynix are fully investing in the research and development and production of HBM chips. This kind of chip stacks multiple DRAMs vertically to increase bandwidth, thereby helping to increase the computing speed of AI chips.

Industry experts say that the growth of HBM chips brought about by artificial intelligence has also driven a variety of high value-added DRAM chips, including PIM in-memory computing chips, DDR5 memory and CXL high-speed interface (computeexpresslink).

In order to maintain their leading position in the market, both SK Hynix and Samsung will go all out to develop next-generation memory chip products.


SK Hynix announced a plan on September 12 to launch the sixth-generation HBM chip: HBM4 in 2026. Samsung is also focusing on developing higher-performance DDR5 and CXL. Company executives said that the integration of CPU with PIM and CXL interfaces will further expand the scope of DRAM usage.

Although the memory chip industry has experienced a downward cycle, the DRAM industry is expected to rebound in the fourth quarter as the effects of production cuts by major original manufacturers become apparent. In addition, the promotion of Intel's fourth-generation Xeon processor Sapphire Rapids will also drive demand for DDR5 to grow.
