Micron has launched the Micron 9550 series of solid-state drives, which it claims are the fastest enterprise-class hard drives in the industry. Micron 9550Pro and 9550Max solid-state drives use the PCIe5.0x4 interface, which has high-speed performance, stronger durability and higher energy efficiency, and is mainly targeted at data centers. Micron's 9550 series solid-state drives are based on a proprietary NVMe2.0b controller, using the PCIeGen5x4 interface and 232-layer 3DTLC NAND memory.
The drives are available in capacities from 3.2TB to 30.72TB, with endurance of one or three full disk writes per day, and in U.2, E1.S and E3.S form factors to meet the requirements of different types of servers. In terms of performance, the Micron 9550NVMe SSD has impressive metrics, including a sequential read speed of 14.0GB/s and a sequential write speed of 10.0GB/s, which is higher than the peak performance of the Samsung PM1743 SSD. In terms of random operations, it achieved 3.3 billion IOPS of random reads and 900,000 IOPS of random writes, once again surpassing competing products.Micron said that energy efficiency is another outstanding feature of Micron 9550 SSD: under the NVIDIA Magnum IOGPU Direct storage system, the energy consumption of each 1TB SSD transferred can be reduced by 81%, and in the MLPerf benchmark test, the SSD's energy consumption can be reduced by 35% compared with competitors."The Micron 9550 SSD represents a giant leap forward in data center storage, delivering an astonishing 3.3 million IOPS while consuming 43% less power than comparable SSDs in artificial intelligence workloads such as GNN and LLM training," said Alvaro Toledo, vice president and general manager of Micron's Data Center Storage Division. "This unparalleled performance combined with outstanding power efficiency sets a new benchmark for AI storage solutions and demonstrates Micron's unwavering commitment to leading the AI revolution."Traditionally, Micron has offered different types of high-end data center SSDs: the Micron 9550Pro drive for read-intensive applications is available in 3.84TB, 7.68TB, 15.36TB and 30.72TB capacities, with durability It is a full disk write once per day (DWPD); the Micron 9550Max hard drive for mixed use has four capacities of 3.2TB, 6.4TB, 12.8TB and 25.6TB, and the endurance is three full disk writes per day (DWPD). All hard drives comply with the OCP2.0r21 standard and OCP2.5 telemetry standard. They also feature SPDM1.2 and FIPS140-3 security, secure execution environment and self-encrypting hard drive options.Micron did not mention pricing for the new drives, as that depends on production volumes and other factors.
